It Takes More Than Six Weeks to Feel Like Yourself Again

In the haze of life with a new baby, hearing that “postpartum recovery is a process” is about as much fun as having someone who got nine hours of uninterrupted sleep the night before tell you how magical life is with a newborn.

While it would be lovely if six weeks was enough time for your body and emotions and sense of self to recover completely from pregnancy and birth, it’s just not. The unfortunate truth is that it’s going to take longer.

Six weeks is, however, a valuable mile-marker along the path. Around this time, most new mums find that the worst of the postpartum period, with its lochia and sore breasts and emotional upheaval, is starting to be behind them.

This is a great time to begin some gentle exercise, like joining a gentle postpartum yoga or Pilates class. This is a great time to experiment with leaving the house with baby, and an even better time to connect with other new parents who are going through – or have recently gone through – similar experiences to yours.

It's also a great time to get help if you need it. If breastfeeding isn’t going as well as you’d hoped, a lactation consultation may help.  If you’ve been running on adrenaline and no sleep and things aren’t getting better, it’s time to evaluate your support system.

Six weeks is a time to take stock of where you are in your journey with your little one, and start taking the next steps toward replenishing yourself.

To make taking those steps a little easier, Mother and Child offers the Re:Born Postpartum Membership. This program offers unlimited access to the best of gentle exercise specifically for postpartum mums – postpartum yoga and Pilates. You also get access to Baby Massage classes where you can develop an even stronger bond with your baby, and access to Baby Café, a weekly event where you can connect with other mums and babies while learning about sleep, feeding, and early parenthood.

If you’re six weeks in and wondering what comes next, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
We’d love to walk this part of the journey with you.

With love,
