Baby Cafe

A nouvelle cuisine offering more than chicken nuggets and pizza?

No, it's Singapore's first 'Baby Cafe' to support women who breastfeed their babies!

The Baby Cafe is a concept started in Britain by two lactation consultants in response to the government's initiative to increase breastfeeding rates. There are now over 40 Baby Cafes in the UK. Singapore's Baby Cafe at Mother and Child is the second one started outside of the UK; the first being in New Zealand. More recently, another Baby Cafe has been opened in Hong Kong (visit website).

The 'Baby Cafe,' provides high quality support and encouragement to those breastfeeding, in a relaxed, social atmosphere. It is staffed by lactation consultants and health visitors trained to assist with common breastfeeding problems.

The Baby Cafe aims to provide a place:

  • where all pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are welcome.
  • where information, help and support can be sought on all breastfeeding issues.
  • where breastfeeding at whatever stage is respected and promoted.
  • where breastfeeding is viewed as a natural way to nourish and nurture a baby/child.

At Mother & Child, we feel promoting breastfeeding is important as studies have shown that breastfeeding provides many benefits for both the baby and mother.

The benefits of breastfeeding for the baby include:

  • improved immune health
  • fewer infections (ear infections, diarrhoea, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections)
  • reduced risk of diabetes
  • reduced childhood obesity
  • reduced allergic disease
  • reduced risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)
  • improved cognitive development/intelligence

The benefits of breastfeeding for the mother include:

  • improved bonding with baby
  • greater weight loss after baby's birth
  • reduced breast, ovarian and endometrial (womb) cancer
  • providing a degree of natural contraception while breastfeeding
  • reduced health care costs as a result of less illness in the baby and mother

Breastfeeding also reduces health care costs for societies and is more environmentally friendly.

So whether you are pregnant and deciding how to feed your baby, have a newborn and experiencing problems or planning to go back to work and you are still breastfeeding, we are on hand to help at the Baby Cafe.

As a drop in centre, the Baby Cafe provides a support network for mothers. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks are provided in a relaxed atmosphere. So come along, have an afternoon out, meet new friends and take some expert advice home with you!

"As a first time Mum, the prospect of parenthood, and all the challenges that come with it, is pretty daunting at times! Yet, here I am, six months down the line with a healthy, happy, exclusively breastfed son Michael, all thanks to the advice and constant support of the Baby Café team.

Baby Café's resident Lactation Consultant, Uma, along with midwives Jane and Yani, have been so instrumental in helping me overcome the hurdles that could well have resulted in me giving up on breastfeeding and all the benefits that go with it. Instead, I now feed with ease and total confidence and can encourage those Mums within the Baby Café group that face the same problems.

Baby Café is a weekly fixture on my calendar where Michael and I can go and meet new people, look forward to seeing the friends we've made, indulge in the most delicious coffee and cake and know that we're not alone on this amazing journey. Michael and I are incredibly grateful for Singapore's very own Baby Café!

See you on Monday afternoon!"
